Team Getaway Guide

Now here’s a thing – ask most people what their best holiday ever was and I bet they’ll say it was when they went away in a big group, either family or friends.  It was more about the company than the location.

Think back to your childhood when hanging around at the bus stop or in the park with your mates was the best thing since….well….anything really……

It’s the same deal.  It’s all about doing something special, making memories and most of all, having your best time with your family and friends.

And that’s what our skittles weekends are all about.  Same formula.  Having fun with your favourite people.

Well our Spring weekend skittles season has just drawn to a close, skittles leagues are preparing for end-of-season celebrations.   But in September the fun begins all over again.

We’ll be staging our annual skittles extravanganza and all the leagues will be starting up again.

So what to do in between?  We know that a lot of our skittles team enjoy our weekends so much they actually take holidays together as well.  Some of them may well be stretched out on the Spanish costas even as I write.  But if your team hasn’t done this before, why not give it a go.  As usual I have some handy hints to offer in my team getaway guide.

You’ve all bonded over beers, chanted on the alleys, crooned to the karaoke and danced yourselves dizzy.  You’re already best mates.  So why not have a break away together again but doing something a little bit different.  If the responsibility for all this lands on your shoulders, I have every sympathy.  Getting a gang of people to agree on budget, location, duration and dates isn’t easy but if you pick somewhere geared up for a group with a bit of personality, possibly in matching teeshirts and a reputation for singing it large, believe me, you’re already halfway there.

Deciding where to go is the worst bit. Too far and you’ll get whingeing.  Too near and ‘it doesn’t feel like we’re away.’   At Serious About Events we’ve found that many coastal towns in the south west are a good bet.  They’re all geared up to a great time away with great walks and sea dips on the doorstep, plus late night bars and clubs, plus lashings of great grub.

Don’t overthink the activities.  Most people will suit themselves or go with the flow.  But a couple of crowd pleasers like an impromptu darts competition, a boat trip or a beach bbq will go down well.  A post-night-out dip in the sea the next morning is highly recommended as a hangover cure.

Food matters.  So does not having to book a pile of tables in advance and chase up the money.  Far better to choose a half board option where everyone gets a hearty breakfast and dinner – lunch can take care of itself.  Main thing is you’re all together having fun.

Getting there – another possible headache.  If you have enough people it’s worth thinking about a private coach hire, or setting up a car share option and splitting the travel costs that way.  That’s a big consideration if you’re venturing abroad.  Go all together by coach to the airport and your holiday starts even sooner.

Be upfront about the budget. And try to avoid hidden extra costs.  Keep the basics basic.  If people want to do extra things, they can sort that themselves. Eg, water sports, spa treatments, golf or shopping.  Keeping it simple means that the organiser, ie you, gets a break too.

Believe me I know about all of the above. We’ve been taking people away on weekend breaks for more than 30 years now.  If everything is organised and paid for in advance, ie the transport, accommodation and board, you too can truly relax.  Well that’s not quite true at Serious About Events as we have a skittles tournament to run!

Final Warning!!!  If you make too good a job of it, you’ll be volunteered again next time!
